What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a science, art, and philosophy that concerns itself with the relationship between the nervous system and the function (health) of the body.
The Science: Since its beginning, chiropractic has been based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body.
While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord and spinal nerves are more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues or organs these nerves control, and is called the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Chiropractic is the science of relating Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, Biochemistry, as well as other basic sciences to patient symptoms and patient treatment. In doing this the chiropractor can effectively diagnose and treat patients and allow their body to heal naturally.
The Art: After a thorough examination and a review of your health history, your chiropractic doctor will recommend a specific care program. If yours is a chiropractic case, this will include specific spinal adjustments.
The word adjustment describes hundreds of ways of using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore spinal bones to a more normal position and motion. When spinal function is improved, nervous system function (health) can improve too.
The Philosophy: Besides the science and art, chiropractic has a philosophical aspect. Doctors of Chiropractic recognize that regardless of the type of doctor you consult, doctors don’t heal; only the body can heal itself. So your chiropractic physician’s main purpose is to help the body to heal itself and function at its optimal level.
What makes Sugarcreek Chiropractic different from other chiropractic clinics?
Our clinic offers comprehensive chiropractic care that includes more than adjusting techniques. Our clinical goals are based on function rather than solely on pain relief because we want to fix the problem and not just cover up the pain. At Sugarcreek Chiropractic we help to reduce pain which in return will restore function. We do this by helping restore proper joint mechanics and muscle activity. Our goal is to get you back to performing your activities of daily living as soon as possible. Another distinct difference about Sugarcreek Chiropractic is that we combine techniques such as muscle and joint manipulation, rehabilitation, therapeutic exercises and physiotherapy modalities to help our patients get better quicker and prevent re-injury. Our patients take ownership in their care which helps them to take control of their health.
Aren't all chiropractors the same?
Definitely not! Many people are surprised to learn that most chiropractors practice differently. There are numerous chiropractic techniques. So if you have been to one chiropractor, you definitely haven’t been to all of them because all chiropractors practice a little different. At Sugarcreek Chiropractic we understand that the combination of joint and muscle manipulation, rehabilitation and therapeutic exercises offers patients superior, results-oriented care. Our knowledge of anatomy and the body's mechanics coupled with our adjusting techniques provides us with the insight to know when a joint should be adjusted, when muscular or rehabilitative therapy is appropriate and when an integrated treatment program is necessary.
Once you go to a Chiropractor will you have to go all the time?
At Sugarcreek Chiropractic the appropriate care is given for the patient’s condition. Not any more and not any less. Once a patient has been released from care and no longer under an active treatment plan, they never have to come back again if treatment is not needed. Our goal throughout the treatment process is to educate our patients about their condition as well as the overall health benefits of chiropractic care. If a patient chooses to seek wellness care and wants to have regular “spinal check-ups” to make sure that everything is balanced and to maintain their health, we are more than happy to help them in that endeavor also.
Do chiropractors refer patients to other specialists?
This question can be answered with another question, “What is best for the patient?” Dr. Brown and Dr. Roberts have established a strong network of health care professionals in which to refer patients that need something other than chiropractic care. Our doctors at Sugarcreek Chiropractic are educated to recognize risk factors and signs of disease or dysfunction and if needed will make the proper referral for the patient. Likewise, medical doctors, dentists, podiatrists and other health care professionals refer patients to Sugarcreek Chiropractic when their patients need comprehensive chiropractic care. This creates an atmosphere where the main focus is on what is best for the patient, which is our main focus at Sugarcreek Chiropractic.
